AHC hard hat tour: Walking through history

The Architectural Heritage Center hosted a “hard hat” tour last Saturday at the Salvation Army building on MLK Blvd. I’ve driven past the building so many times over the years and it’s so a part of the urban landscape of the Grand/MLK Blvd. fabric that I almost knew where it was by memory alone (“the… Read More AHC hard hat tour: Walking through history

Alive and kicking in Clackamas

Out in Clackamas County, there are lot fulls of wonderful older home stock that have managed to survive being torn down for suburbia. This beauty I’ve driven by numerous times. Only since the Trolley Trail has been built where this is clearly visible have I had the chance to stop and admire. There’s a fence… Read More Alive and kicking in Clackamas

Know your history, Portland

I love when history and technology meet. The What Was There site (and app) is a perfect example of mashing old technology (photography) and newer tech (Google Street View maps). Essentially you get a “then” photo with the ability to drag your mouse to see the “now” version. Closer to home, the folks behind the… Read More Know your history, Portland

Yeon Building gets a facelift

Walking around downtown Portland today we noticed that the bottom floor of the Yeon Building is getting some major renovation work done to it. Interesting to note the layers of history peeled back–from the exposed brick to the steel beams of previous tenants.

Top 9 pics of 2025. The Acrop building is for sale!?" I’ve walked by the Golden Nugget in downtown Milwaukie untold times over the years but had never stepped foot inside until last night, and man, I’ve been missing out. Time capsule. Friendly bartender, late 60s interior vibe, booths. We got a mystery on our hands folks! I wrote a local theater roundup a million years (OK, 15) ago but it still works. From the listing: This iconic mid-century home is tucked amongst the trees near the University of Oregon, Hendricks Park and the Ridgeline Trail. The house was designed in 1965 by renowned Eugene architect Otto Poticha, and has been carefully renovated & reimagined to 21st century standards by exacting and creative owners. All the original integrity is intact, including solid cedar ceilings, and floor to ceiling picture windows w/ filtered views of downtown and coast range sunsets.
