Sign of the times

Portland Penny Diner’s new signage wins Sign of the Year, hands down! From the restaurant’s website: In 1845 Frances Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy determined the city of Portland’s name with the flip of a coin. And we like to think that after the toss they walked into their favorite diner, or as they called them… Read More Sign of the times

Lost: Country Bills, Portland, Ore.

A few weeks back, Country Bills in Woodstock was demolished to make way for Gawd-knows-what (mixed-used condos?). My pal managed to capture a couple of pix of ghost signs that were revealed during the demo. What else is there to say? Was the food good? Hardly. But it was more than just a restaurant- it… Read More Lost: Country Bills, Portland, Ore.

#IYKYK. Portland/Sellwood noir. Then (1963) and now. From the postcard: New on the ol’ blog: a look at William L. Finley, his life along the Willamette, and why his fight for the river still feels very current (heh). Folk art whimsy alert in Milwaukie. Milwaukie neon. The former Perry’s Pharmacy Building in downtown Milwaukie is getting a new life and being retrofitted into new retail spaces. I wrote about the project - hop into my bio to read! The light hit just right last night at the Willamette Falls. I found a clipping (swipe) about the Beachcombers Club in Lake Oswego mentioning the Jim Benton Trio from the Oregon Mirror, June 1962. (Says Wiki: The Oregon Mirror was an African-American newspaper founded by Jimmy "Bang Bang" Walker and Don Alford in 1961.)
