Built Blocks: Oregon building + architecture news for April 2024

I read tons of news about Oregon architecture, buildings, and history so why not share it with readers? Here are some interesting items I think you might enjoy for April 2024.

Bureaucracy in action
The city passed a sign banning neon signs decades ago but historic signs like Omar’s were considered “grandfathered in.” But, the ordinance banning neon signs could be sidestepped if the  sign was registered as a historic landmark. And that’s where the red tape began.

Midcentury wonder
Woods inside and out, plus a wine room, a Murphy bed, and stained glass, all next to the old Alpenrose Dairy in Southwest Portland.

Reusing old buildings
At a recent City Council meeting, members of Portland’s Historic Landmarks Commission asked elected officials to rethink the “new build” approach to housing production. Glad to see Peggy Moretti’s name in the press again – fighting the good fight.

Mid-century loft dreams
I follow Marshall Steeves on Instagram and it’s clear he’s a real photographer unlike a lot of folks on Insta shooting buildings (i.e. yours truly). Apartment Therapy did a profile  of his a mid-century modern dream loft in Portland.
